1992 Salsa Custom #1040

By the early 1990's the production of Salsa mountain bikes was dominated by TIG-welded models such as the popular Ala Carte.  The custom, fillet-brazed "Scoboni" bikes hand-built by Ross Shafer were still requested by people that wanted something a little special or had specific requirements.  This bike was one of the last customs Ross made.  The original owner of this bike already had a stout 1988 Salsa mountain touring bike and wanted something lighter with the comfort of a suspension fork.  The bike was designed to accommodate a Rock Shox Mag 21.  Being a serious hot pepper freak, the owner had the bike custom painted by Mark Bunten aka Dr. Deltron with a chili pepper motif on the seattube and the legs of the original suspension fork.  The color was specified as 1980 Porsche light green metallic, factory paint code #L275.  To save weight the bike received titanium parts including a seatpost and various bolts from SRP.  A stronger rear wheel was accomplished by designing the frame with a 140 mm rear axle spacing.  The rear WTB Multimount shifter adapter was modified to have a barrel adjuster for rear derailleur adjustments while riding.  Although not original to the bike, the WTB Velociraptor tires with a grey Umma Gumma compound are pre-production samples.  The tires came from Gary Klein and the individual weights were marked on the tires.  Every gram counts!
