1988 Tesch Mountain
Dave Tesch was an accomplished frame builder out of San Marcos, CA known primarily for road bikes designed for racing. Dave developed his skill working for the Trek Bicycle Company as well as Masi USA before starting off on his own in the mid-1980s. Dave built a series of mountain bikes known as the LC-1 model in the mid-1990's. However, this bike appears to be earlier, based on both the serial number as well as the frame features. The rear spacing is 130 mm, the seatpost is held with an integral Campagnolo binder, the rear brake cable stop is a one-sided peg, and the handlebar and stem are one piece with internal cable routing. While the fillets on the handlebar and stem are fully finished, the brazing on the frame is not. The frameset with Nuovo Record headset remained pristine and unbuilt for 30 years before becoming part of the Workshop collection. With a 72 degree head angle and 74 degree seat angle, the bike is certainly responsive and requires the full attention of the rider. The steel handlebar and stem combo is ultra stiff. Combining this with a straight blade Koski fork and a handlebar width of less than 22 inches results in a bike that is "Built for Speed" just like it says on the chainstays.
