1988 Otis Guy
Otis Guy was a significant contributor to the development of the mountain bike from its earliest days, beginning with clunker bikes and race events such as the Repack downhill in Marin, to national championships and the NORBA race series. Otis also helped found Velo Club Tamalpais, which would grow to include within its membership such mountain bike pioneers as Joe Breeze, Marc Vendetti, Charles Kelly, and Gary Fisher. In 1982, Otis began making his own mountain bikes with a reputation for quick handling influenced by his many prior years as a strong road bike racer. This classic example, finished with gorgeous Imron paint, features beautiful fillet brazing and the Type II fork design of fellow Marin local Charlie Cunningham. With a low-rise 140 mm stem on a 19" frame, the bike offers an aggressive stance and demands to be ridden fast. The original owner of this bike was one of the youngest members of Velo Club Tamalpais and would become an accomplished junior road racer and Olympic hopeful. Vintage photos of the owner and his ultra-rare Velo Club clothing are included in the photo gallery. In recent years, Otis has contributed to the creation and sustained operation of the Marin Museum of Bicycling and Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in Fairfax, CA.
