1983 Salsa Custom #21
This Salsa was the 21st mountain bike made by Ross Shafer, and one of only 30 or so bikes that got fully finished fillets and an incredible bi-plane fork with one-piece crown and round blades. The frame is stout, with a toptube which is 1.25 inches in diameter and a match to the downtube diameter. The stem has direct cable routing through the extension, and pre-dates the iconic Salsa roller stem. The original camouflage paint has more of a military theme as compared to the wildly colored "pooftaflage" schemes. The build of this bike features many of the premium parts of the day, including Phil Wood pedals and bottom bracket, Ideale 90 saddle with alloy rails, Sugino AT cranks, Magura shorty levers, black Ukai rims, Shimano high-flange hubs, and Campagnolo headset and quick releases.
