1983 Charlie Cunningham Indian #43
Charlie Cunningham built this Indian in 1983 and put it on consignment at Point Reyes Bikes, where it remained on display as a frame kit for several years. Finally, in 1986 it was sold to John Groo of Moab, Utah, and sent to Rim Cyclery to be built into a complete bike. As a result, the bike was a blend of features and parts available between 1983 and 1986, and has been restored as near as possible to this original configured. Of special note on this bike is the Type I fork with reinforcements on the back of the legs, and the Suntour rollercam brake modified by Charlie to accept linear springs and an aggressive cam plate. In conjunction with Rim Cyclery, John would go on to start Rim Tours, the first guiding company to offer trips specifically for mountain bikes. This Indian model saw many off-road adventures in and around Moab, and eventually passed into the hands of Todd Campbell, another fixture of the early Moab mountain bike scene. Todd continued to ride the bike, year round, and wrote the classic book "Above and Beyond Slickrock" which helped make Moab the mountain bike destination it still is today.
