1980 Breezer Series II, #15
This Breezer Series II was purchased mail-order from the Cove Bike Shop in Marin by Jack Laughlin after he was witness to the conclusion of the 1979 Pearl Pass Tour in Aspen, CO. In previous years Jack had fabricated and ridden his own klunker bike in Gold Hill, CO, using moped drum brakes and unaware of similar activities taking place in Marin. The excessive 50 pound weight of that bike made it clear that a different bike was needed to be able to climb the mountains of Colorado. For more than 35 years, this Breezer was Jack's only mountain bike and his constant companion. The bike enabled him to explore places far and wide, including the Indian Peaks Wilderness, Crested Butte, the San Juan Mountains, Moab, Australia, and the Borrego Desert. Despite all of these adventures, including a brief dunk in the Indian Ocean, the nickel plating has been well preserved by life in dry climates and the bike has retained nearly all of it's original parts. The bike looks identical to the day it left Cove, and is a stunning example of the craftsmanship of Joe Breeze, including his smooth fillets, box crown fork, and attention to detail.
Like Breezer Series II #11, this bike spent some of it's life in Boulder, CO, yet the two bikes apparently never crossed paths.
An entertaining account of the klunker days in Gold Hill and the saga of this Breezer are available as a PDF file for download. Original photos of the klunker bike and the Breezer being ridden are also included in the photo gallery. The original Cove Bike Shop catalog the bike was ordered from is also shown.
